The author was a soldier in the 4th Kentucky Cavalry (C. S. A.) and fought in the Battle of Saltville in Virginia. The battle was fought by regular and homeguard Confederate units against regular Union troops, including one of the few black cavalry units, over an important saltworks in the town. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory and route of the Union forces, but is also remembered for the massacre of the Union wounded afterwards.
